PNG to ICO converter

This PNG to ICO converter turns any PNG into one .ico file with several icon sizes inside, so it works as a favicon, a Windows icon and more.

Icon sizes (px)

All selected sizes are stored in one .ico file. 16, 32, 48 and 256 cover browsers and Windows.

How to convert PNG to ICO

  1. Choose or drop your PNG files above. A square image of at least 256x256 pixels gives the best result.
  2. Keep the default sizes (16, 32, 48 and 256 pixels) or tick the ones you need.
  3. Download the .ico file. Each PNG becomes its own ICO file.

Why one ICO file holds several sizes

An ICO file is a small container that stores the same picture at different sizes. Windows and browsers pick the size that fits: 16 pixels for a browser tab, 32 for the taskbar, 48 for a desktop shortcut and 256 for large icon views. Each size here is drawn from your original, not stretched from the smaller ones, so every one is as sharp as it can be.

Use it as a favicon generator

A favicon is the small icon shown in a browser tab. To use the file, name it favicon.ico, upload it to the root folder of your website and add this line inside the head of your pages: link rel="icon" href="/favicon.ico" sizes="48x48". Browsers also request /favicon.ico on their own, so many sites work with just the file in place.

Modern sites often add a 180x180 PNG for iPhone home screens as well. Make one with the image resizer and keep the .ico for older browsers and Windows.

Tips for a sharp icon

  • Start from a simple, bold design. Fine detail disappears at 16 pixels.
  • Use a PNG with a transparent background so the icon sits cleanly on any tab colour.
  • If your picture is not square, choose between keeping the whole picture with transparent padding or cropping it to a square.
  • Check the 16 pixel version on a light and a dark tab before you publish.

Frequently asked questions

Which icon sizes should I include?

For a website favicon, 16, 32 and 48 pixels cover browser tabs and bookmarks. Add 256 pixels for Windows icons. The defaults of 16, 32, 48 and 256 work for most uses.

Does the ICO keep transparency?

Yes. Each size is stored as a PNG with its alpha channel, so transparent backgrounds stay transparent.

Can I make a favicon.ico for my website here?

Yes. Convert your logo, rename the result to favicon.ico if needed, and upload it to the root of your site.

Is my image uploaded to a server?

No. The icon is built inside your browser, so your logo never leaves your device.
