How to convert GIF to AVIF
- Choose or drop one or more GIF files above.
- Adjust quality if needed. 90% keeps excellent detail.
- Download each AVIF, or save them all as a ZIP.
Why convert GIF to AVIF?
GIF is an old format with a limited palette, and its files are large for what they hold. AVIF stores the same picture in far less space. For logos, banners and still images saved as GIF, converting can cut the size dramatically, which speeds up web pages.
Animated GIFs
This tool creates a still image. If your GIF is animated, only the first frame is kept, and the animation is lost. Keep your original file if you need the movement, and use the converted file only where a still picture is enough.
How the AVIF is created
Browsers can show AVIF but cannot create it, so this page includes its own AVIF encoder. It downloads once from this site (about 3.5MB), your browser caches it, and the conversion runs on your device. The first file takes a little longer, and large images take longer than small ones.
Choosing quality
The default 90% keeps detail in flat graphics. Photos can go lower, around 70 to 80%, with no visible change and an even smaller file.

When to keep the GIF
If a picture needs to move, keep the GIF or use a short video instead. AVIF here is best for still images that were saved as GIF: logos, buttons, diagrams and banners. Compare the new file with the original at full size before you replace it on a website.
- Flat colours and sharp edges look best at a higher quality setting.
- Photo-like GIFs have only 256 colours, so AVIF cannot add back colour that is missing.
Frequently asked questions
Does it keep the animation?
No. The AVIF is a still image made from the first frame of the GIF.
Why is the first conversion slower?
Your browser downloads the AVIF encoder (about 3.5MB) the first time. After that it is cached and conversions start faster.
How much smaller will the file be?
Often 70% or more for photo-like GIFs. Very small or simple GIFs gain less.
