Compress image to 1MB

Compress image to 1MB by setting the limit once. Every photo comes out at 1MB or smaller, ready for forms, applications and uploads that reject large files.

Each image will be this size or smaller.

Where a 1MB limit is used

A 1MB limit is one of the most common upload caps on forums, content management systems, email forms and marketplaces.

How to compress an image to 1MB

  1. Choose or drop your photo above. JPG, PNG, WebP and GIF all work.
  2. Leave the target at 1MB, or type a different limit in KB.
  3. Download the result. The new file size is shown next to each image.

How the size limit is reached

The tool looks for the highest image quality that still fits under 1MB. If quality alone is not enough, it reduces the pixel dimensions step by step until the file fits, so you do not have to guess settings in a photo editor.

What to expect at 1MB

A typical photo at this size ends up around 2,640 x 1,980 to 3,530 x 2,640 pixels in a 4:3 shape. A 4MB phone photo has to shrink to about 25% of its size to fit. Expect a crisp picture with little visible change from the original. The tool mainly removes quality and dimensions you cannot see on a screen.

File size is not the same as pixel size

A limit of 1MB is about the number of bytes in the file, not the width and height of the picture. A large picture can fit if it is simple, and a small picture can break the limit if it is full of detail. That is why the tool adjusts quality first and dimensions only when it has to.

Compressing several photos

Drop in up to 30 images and each one is reduced to 1MB or smaller. Photos with very different detail end up at different pixel sizes, because each one gets the best quality that fits. Download them one by one or as a ZIP.

Tips for a better result

  • Resize to the dimensions you really need first, for example 2000 pixels wide, for a smaller starting point.
  • If the result looks too soft, raise the limit a little rather than shrinking the dimensions further.
  • Use the ZIP download for large batches of photos.

Frequently asked questions

Will my photo still look good at 1MB?

Yes. At this size most photos look the same as the original on any screen.

Why did my image come out as JPG?

PNG files cannot be shrunk by lowering quality, so reaching a size limit usually requires JPEG. Choose WebP in Output format if you prefer it.

Is 1MB good for website images?

It is a fine upper limit for content images. Hero images and portfolios may need more, while thumbnails and icons should be much smaller, so size each image for where it is shown.

Is it safe to compress ID photos to 1MB here?

Yes. The file is processed inside your browser and never uploaded, so ID photos, signatures and scans stay on your device.
