When do you need BMP?

PNG is the better format almost everywhere, but a few places still ask for BMP. Older Windows programs, microcontroller displays, lab equipment and some game or hobby tools read only plain bitmaps. If something rejects your PNG, this converter gives it the format it expects.

What changes

  • File size grows a lot. A BMP stores every pixel without compression, so expect a file many times larger than the PNG.
  • Transparent areas become white, because the 24-bit BMP has no alpha channel.
  • The picture itself is not changed. No detail is lost.

Keep the size manageable

If the target device has limits, use the Resize setting first. For example a picture of 800 by 480 pixels is only about 1.2MB as a BMP. Resizing before conversion is faster than converting a large image and shrinking it afterwards.
